Hermes Explains: Thirty Questions about Esotericism. Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press. Abstract Few fields of academic research are surrounded by so many misunderstandings and misconceptions as the study of Western esotericism. For twenty years now, the Centre for History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents University of Amsterdam has been at the forefront of international scholarship in this domain. This anniversary volume seeks to make the modern study of Western esotericism more widely known beyond specialist circles, while addressing a range of misconceptions, biases, and prejudices that still tend to surround it. Thirty-one major scholars in the field respond to questions about a wide range of unfamiliar ideas, traditions, practices, problems, and personalities that are central to the field.

The Faecal immunochemical test qFIT checks for blood in your faeces. Normally, only a very small amount of blood is lost in the stomach of intestines. This is less than you can see in your faeces and is not enough to be detected with a FIT test. A positive FIT test will tell your doctor that you have bleeding occurring somewhere in your gastrointestinal tract. This blood loss could be due to ulcers, bulges, polyps, inflammatory blowel disease, haemorrhoids piles , swallowed blood from bleeding gums or nosebleeds, or it could be due to early bowel cancer.

Anything that sticks out into the intestine, like a polyp or tumour, and is rubbed against by the faeces as it passes through, has the potential to blood now and again. Often this small amount of blood is the first, and sometimes the only, symptom of early bowel cancer.

With an ever-increasing elderly population, hip fracture is a major public health issue with an annual incidence of around 70,—75, hip fractures per annum within the UK. Magnetic resonance imaging MRI has been considered to be the reference standard for second-line imaging [ 11 – 13 ] with limited data on the use of computed tomography CT in evaluating occult femoral fractures. The purpose of this current study was to retrospectively analyze the clinical accuracy of CT as second-line imaging in the diagnosis of the occult hip fracture.

Using the radiology information system, CT examinations were performed in two large teaching hospitals for the suspected occult neck of femur fracture over a 24 month period. Radiographic and cross-sectional imaging of each patient was reviewed and the diagnosis, subsequent third-line imaging and other follow-up imaging documented.

Standard multi-planar reconstructions in three orthogonal planes with 1—2 mm thickness were obtained with studies performed on a 64 detector helical CT scanner and six studies on an eight detector helical CT scanner. Surgery and or healing on follow-up imaging were considered as confirmation of fracture. The negative radiological follow- up to study end date or date of death was considered to rule out a fracture.

This thesis aims to provide a fuller understanding of a highly important but still controversial aspect of Isaac Newton’s natural philosophy: the role of occult, or at least non-mechanical, principles in his natural philosophy. The most obvious of these was his belief that gravity was an attractive force which operated across empty space, and so was an occult actio in distans. But there are other aspects of Newton’s work which would have been regarded by Cartesian contemporaries as occult; such as his belief that light can be an active component within bodies, that light and other matter can be converted into one another, and that bodies are not inert and passive but manifest various principles of activity.

Westfall, suggested in the s that Newton’s unprecedented success as a natural philosopher was due to the fact that he combined two seemingly antithetical traditions of natural knowledge, the mechanical tradition, and what he called the Hermetic tradition. This thesis replaces Westfall’s outdated notion of a “Hermetic” tradition with broader occult or natural magical traditions and shows how they formed the context within which Newton’s own work was formed.

The thesis is not primarily a study of Newton’s work but a study of the work of earlier English thinkers who can be seen to have established the occult traditions which were subsequently taken up by Newton. Each chapter, therefore, focuses on a different aspect of occult ways of thinking in natural philosophy during the early modern period, and finally shows, in the conclusion to each chapter, how these ideas appeared in Newton’s work, and, as Westfall suggested, contributed to his unprecedented success.

Over six chapters the thesis considers theories that the world system is a network of radiating forces analogous to light rays, that gravity is an attractive force analogous to magnetism and operates at a distance, that matter has the power to attract and repel other matter, or has the power to incessantly emit active material effluvia, or the power to vibrate.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn Latin : Ordo Hermeticus Aurorae Aureae ; or, more commonly, the Golden Dawn Aurora Aurea was a secret society devoted to the study and practice of the occult , metaphysics , and paranormal activities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Known as a magical order , the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was active in Great Britain and focused its practices on theurgy and spiritual development.

Many present-day concepts of ritual and magic that are at the centre of contemporary traditions, such as Wicca [1] [2] and Thelema , were inspired by the Golden Dawn, which became one of the largest single influences on 20th-century Western occultism. Westcott appears to have been the initial driving force behind the establishment of the Golden Dawn.

The Golden Dawn system was based on hierarchy and initiation like the Masonic lodges ; however women were admitted on an equal basis with men.
